Neurochemical Research Unit

Principal Areas of Research in the W.G. Dewhurst Laboratories, Neurochemical Research Unit include:

  1. Neurochemistry of psychiatric and neurological disorders (amino acids, biogenic amines, neuroactive steroids).
  2. Mechanisms of action and metabolism of drugs used to treat neuropsychiatric disorders.
  3. Drug development with an emphasis on neuroprotection.
  4. Brain cell death, plasticity, and repair.
  5. Neuron-glia interactions.
  6. Neuroprotective and rehabilitation strategies after stroke.
  7. Neurobiology of motivation and reward - interactions of 5-HT, dopamine, GABA and glutamate.
