Thesis Title:
Can a novel form of police training alter behaviour towards those with addictions and other psychiatric problems?

Research Interests: My research focuses on training Edmonton Police Officers about mental illness. Individuals with psychiatric problems, and addictions are significantly more prone to end up in interactions with police. These interactions sometime lack understanding between both parties and it is my focus to change this interaction for the better. I hope that by training police officers about the different mental illnesses and communication techniques when interacting with the mentally ill on the streets of Edmonton, we can work towards increasing empathy and understanding and decreasing stigma felt by officers when dealing with psychiatric issues. I work in close collaboration with the Edmonton Police Service training unit in implementing a novel training regime, as well as analyzing the affects the training had on behaviour and attitudes post-training.
