Psychiatry is a specialty discipline of medicine that deals with the etiology, prevention, diagnosis, management and rehabilitation of disorders affecting mental functioning. The five-year residency training program in Psychiatry at the University of Alberta is a well-established training program with broad-based academic and clinical orientations.
Overall Goals of the Program
The program is designed to assist its residents to:
Become competent psychiatrists able to manage a variety of clinical situations and problems in different settings in an ethical manner.
Have good background knowledge of the basic sciences applicable to psychiatry. Be able to work in a variety of roles as member of a multidisciplinary team.
Satisfy the training requirements of, prepare for, and pass the certification examinations of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Be able to develop skills and knowledge in the expanded roles of scholar, professional, advocate, manager, collaborator, communicator, and medical expert (CanMeds 2005).
