PGY-4 and PGY-5

The final two years introduce new emphasis in clinical experience. Increasing independence in the range and practice of clinical psychiatry is expected. In addition residents may elect to spend time in a subspecialty, in research, in a field of medicine related to psychiatry, or in a related basic science.

These years are directed towards completing a cycle of education which will:

  • consolidate knowledge and skills in general psychiatry for successfully passing the certification examination of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • begin to function as a junior consultant
  • achieve expertise in a subspecialty of psychiatry such as community psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, rehabilitation psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, alcoholism and addictions, administrative psychiatry
  • acquire expertise in a related field of medicine and/or in a related research or basic science field
  • continue the expansion of psychotherapeutic skills
  • demonstrate evidence of developed expertise by the presentation of material in the Department or by publication
  • acquire skills and attitudes to continue self evaluation and education throughout a professional career

During these years the remainder of the Royal College core requirements are completed including Rehab Psychiatry (6 months) and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry (4 months). The remaining time is devoted to electives (14 months).
