January 2012

  • Congratulations to Dr. Mandi Newton and co-investigators Drs. Pamela Baxter, Carlo Carandang, Sarah Curtis, Elenore Fitzpatrick, Mona Jabbour, David Johnson, Anthony Joyce, Arto Ohinmaa, Ronda Rosychuk and Micheal Young who have been awarded a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Title: "Developing an Internet-based program for anxious youth who visit the emergency department for mental health care: A strategy to increase access to post-crisis care".
  • Congratulations to Dr. Bradley Kerr and co-investigators Drs. Glen Baker and Bradley Taylor for successfully securing a CIHR Operating Grant who have been awarded a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Title: "Targeting amino acid and biogenic amine neurotransmitters to improve functional outcomes in EAE."
  • Congratulations to Yanlin Wang (PhD Student, supervisor Dr. Satya Kar) for being awarded an Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Studentship.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Esther Fujiwara along with Dr. Jeremy Caplan, Chris Madan and Sara Tomlinson who have been awarded a grant from the Alberta Gaming Research Institute. Title: "Individual differences in reward-based memory enhancement".

June 2011

  • Dr. Margaret MacSween was awards the Alberta Jenkinson and Stephan Buhl Award.  This award is awarded annually to a medical residents registered in a program within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. The recipient will be selected on the basis of qualities of leadership and collegiality and contributions made to the well being of other residents. Recipients must be seen as role models on the basis of their ability to contribute towards a pleasant and productive learning environment for other residents.

  • Congratulations to Ashely Radomski (MSc student) the recipient of the  Sir Frederick Banting and Dr. Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship-Master's  and the Walter H Johns award
  • Drs. Ian Winship and Nikolai Malykhin were both successful in securing CIHR Open Operating grants - congratulations to both!
  • Dr. Winship was also awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Award and has also been named a Research Ambassador  by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. 

2010 

  • Dr. Krishna Balachandra received an award at the Faculty Recognition Ceremony for Preceptor Excellence from the third-year medical students.  
  • Yanlin Wang, a graduate student with Dr. Satya Kar, was recently awarded a Graduate Student Recruitment Studentship from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, congrats Yanlin!
  • Dr. Gary Hnatko has also received the honor of being inducted as a Fellow of The Canadian Psychiatric Association for his contribution to Canadian psychiatry.
  • Dr. Dursun and colleagues secured financial support from the Norlien Foundation for their work on brain functions in high-risk adolescent children using fMRI techniques.
  • Dr. Winship has been awarded equipment grants from Alberta Advanced Education and Technology and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
  • Dr. Fujiwara and colleagues’ work on decision making in Multiple Sclerosis has been supported by the University Hospital Foundation (UHF).
  • Dr. Fujiwara was also successful in securing a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council  (SSHRC) award for her studies on emotional memory and forgetting in repressive coping. 
  • Dr. Ian Winship was an Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions Scholarship winner.
  • Dr. Kathryn Todd was awarded Honors with Distinction for Teaching in the Faculty of Science.
    Congratulations to Comfort Dibal, a graduate student with Dr. Todd, who was recently awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship.
  • Dr. Winship was also successful in his applications for operating and salary support from Alberta Innovates—Health Solutions, University Hospital Foundation and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
  • Dr. Winship’s work focuses on novel strategies to protect brain tissue in the course of neurological and neuropsychiatric disease and on strategies to augment natural repair mechanisms in response to brain damage or degeneration.
  • Dr. Le Mellédo was awarded the Cranston Family Research Donation for his work on the role of glutamate in depression during perimenopause.
  • Dr. Glen Baker  has been appointed as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
